Google Slapped With $1 Billion Fine Under Landmark EU Digital Law

The European Union imposed a record 890 million euro ($1 billion) fine on Google under the Digital Markets Act, marking the company’s first DMA penalty. Regulators said Google gives preferential treatment to its own services in search results, including travel-related offerings, while third-party services receive less prominent placement. The Commission also accused Google of violating anti-steering rules by restricting app developers from freely promoting and directing users to alternative offers and signing up outside Google Play. Google said it is reviewing the decision and may appeal.
