Gas Pipeline Explosion Triggers Fire at Tishreen Power Plant, Disrupting Syria's Energy Grid

DAMASCUS — A massive explosion at a gas pipeline feeding the Tishreen thermal power plant southeast of Damascus ignited a fire late on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 forcing multiple generating stations offline and severely straining Syria's fragile national electricity grid.

The blast occurred near a pressure-reduction station at the entrance to the Tishreen facility in Eastern Ghouta, approximately 36 kilometers (22 miles) from the capital. Large orange flames illuminated the night sky and were visible from surrounding towns across the region. Two people were injured in the incident, according to state media.

Emergency crews and Civil Defense teams rushed to the site, containing the fire and transitioning the operation to a cooling-down phase by early Thursday morning.

The disruption immediately severed fuel supplies required for power generation, knocking the Tishreen facility out of service alongside two other major generating stations—Deir Ali and Nasiriyah. The loss of capacity forced the Syrian Electricity Company to warn of reduced output across the national grid and an extension of local power-rationing schedules.

Energy Ministry officials confirmed that technical teams are conducting thorough inspections of damaged gas lines, substations, and generating units before bringing affected units back online. Preliminary assessments indicate structural damage concentrated around gas conduits and electrical cables, while primary turbines remain subject to safety evaluations.

The incident highlights the ongoing vulnerability of Syria's critical infrastructure following years of conflict and recent energy shortages. Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion, which occurred just two days after a separate blast hit a gas pipeline in eastern Syria.

Repair crews remain on site to complete assessments and begin restoration work as official updates on grid recovery are expected in the coming hours.

In response to the growing energy emergency, international humanitarian organizations and regional partners have expressed concern over the compounded hardship on residents who already face severe daily blackout periods. Local authorities have appealed for emergency assistance and prioritized key healthcare facilities and public water pumping stations to receive fallback generator power while technical teams work around the clock to stabilize the grid.
