From Virtual Worlds to Living Intelligence: Meta’s Big Pivot

In the soft glow of augmented-reality ambitions, a new chapter has quietly begun. Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has appointed Vishal Shah — a long-time company veteran and former metaverse executive — to lead product management for Meta’s artificial intelligence portfolio.

Shah’s journey at Meta reflects the company’s own evolution. He spent years overseeing product management at Instagram, then stepped into the high-profile role of Vice President of Metaverse in 2021 as Meta sought to re-imagine the internet as a virtual world. Now, as Meta cuts roughly 600 jobs in its Superintelligence Labs unit and signals a sharper focus on AI, Zuckerberg is placing Shah at the helm of the product-side transition.

This move embodies more than an internal shuffle—it is a narrative shift. Meta’s metaverse dreams, once pitched as the company’s future, are giving way to a reality where artificial intelligence takes center stage. Shah’s mission is to bring coherence to Meta’s sprawling AI efforts, integrating them across Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Meta’s hardware ambitions and virtual/augmented reality units.

Yet, this is not without its tensions. The metaverse effort required massive investment, faced user-adoption challenges, and has been criticized as lagging business returns. Pivoting to AI places Meta in head-to-head competition with OpenAI, Google LLC and Anthropic—each pouring resources into building the next frontier of intelligence. Shah brings product-scale experience, but the stakes are high: delivering cutting-edge AI is both more immediate and unforgiving than shaping virtual worlds.
