From Extension to Reversal: Ford’s Retreat on the $7,500 EV Credit

They once vowed to carry the torch forward — after the tax credit expired at midnight on September 30th, automakers had crafted a path to keep it alive. Ford, embracing that mission, quietly rolled out a plan: its financing arm would purchase electric vehicles from dealer inventory, thereby securing the $7,500 federal credit, and then lease them to customers with that benefit built in. It was a clever maneuver, a workaround walking the edge between subsidy and strategy.

But the path proved too narrow. Ford has now reversed course: it will no longer claim that tax credit extension through its financing arm. The decision follows similar backtracking by General Motors and mounting political criticism over whether the maneuver was within the spirit of the law. Ford says it will instead focus on maintaining competitive lease pricing and continue offering incentives such as 0% financing for eligible buyers.

The reversal underscores just how intertwined policy and product have become in the EV era. When subsidies vanish, demand trembles; when companies try to resurrect them, scrutiny arises. Ford’s move signals that the balance between innovation, legality, and market confidence is frail.

Ford has abandoned its program to extend the $7,500 federal EV tax credit via its financing arm and will no longer claim the subsidy in that manner.
