Between Discounts and Algorithms, China’s E-Commerce Landscape Enters a More Difficult Season

China’s online marketplace moves quickly, but not every season carries the same speed. Behind the familiar stream of discounts, product listings, livestreams, and mobile purchases, competition has become increasingly intense. For PDD Holdings, the latest quarterly figures offer a glimpse of that changing rhythm.

PDD, the Chinese e-commerce company behind Pinduoduo and the international platform Temu, reported second-quarter revenue of 112.36 billion yuan, an 8% increase from a year earlier. The result was below analysts’ average estimate of 116.35 billion yuan, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters.

Net income attributable to ordinary shareholders declined 12% year over year to 27.2 billion yuan. Adjusted earnings nevertheless exceeded expectations, creating a mixed quarterly picture in which profitability held up better than the revenue headline might suggest.

The pressure is especially visible inside China, where PDD competes with established platforms including Alibaba’s Taobao and Tmall, JD.com, and ByteDance-owned Douyin. Discounts, subsidies, merchant incentives, and livestream commerce have intensified the battle for consumers and sellers.

For Pinduoduo, price has long been central to its appeal. The platform built a large user base around low-cost products and group-oriented shopping, while its international counterpart Temu expanded the model into markets outside China.

But maintaining that approach can become increasingly expensive when rivals respond with their own promotions. Companies must balance attractive prices for consumers with incentives for merchants, logistics costs, marketing expenses, and the need to preserve profitability.

Temu also faces a more complicated environment overseas. Regulatory changes and trade measures in major markets have increased costs and created additional uncertainty for low-value cross-border shipments. Those developments can affect both delivery economics and the prices ultimately paid by consumers.

PDD has indicated that it is investing in logistics and merchant support as it seeks to strengthen its ecosystem. Such spending can weigh on short-term profitability while potentially improving the company's ability to retain merchants and customers over a longer period.

The quarterly results therefore arrive at an interesting moment for Chinese e-commerce. Digital shopping remains enormous, but the market is becoming more mature and crowded. Growth can no longer depend simply on adding users; platforms must also persuade existing customers to spend more while keeping merchants active.

For PDD, the latest numbers show a business still expanding but at a more measured pace. Revenue rose 8%, while profit declined 12%, and competition remains intense both at home and abroad. The next phase will depend on how effectively the company can balance prices, investment, customer demand, and profitability in an increasingly crowded digital marketplace.
