“From Ashes to Altitude: Rediscovering Pompeii’s Hidden Towers”

Walking among the crumbling stones of Pompeii, one might imagine the city frozen in the moment of disaster — a silent tableau of scattered amphorae, collapsed roofs, and empty streets. Yet recent discoveries whisper of a past more towering and alive — of staircases that once climbed skyward, ferrying footsteps to lofty rooms where laughter, banquets, and glimpses of the sea once stirred. What sprang up again beneath the dust is not just walls, but a new depth to an old city’s soul.

Across centuries, some villas in Pompeii stood tall — until the eruption of Eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE buried them. Lower floors survived, but upper levels collapsed long before modern archaeologists arrived. What remained were fragments: sockets for beams, faint outlines on fallen walls — like a broken staircase leading to nothing. Now, thanks to renewed study and digital reconstruction, one such staircase in a grand residence known as House of Thiasus reveals a vanished architecture.

Archaeologists from Pompeii Archaeological Park together with researchers at Humboldt University of Berlin, under the project POMPEII RESET, applied LiDAR scanning, close-range photography, and 3D modelling to reconstruct upper floors lost to time. The monumental stone staircase in the House of Thiasus — which once seemed to climb to nowhere — now makes sense: it led to a multi-level tower, with a wooden staircase internally and an upper hall possibly used for dining or leisure, encircled by windows opening toward the Bay of Naples.

This reconstruction challenges the familiar image of Pompeii as a city of single-story homes and low-lying domus: instead, the ruins point to a vertical cityscape where villas boasted towers, panoramic views, and multi-level grandeur. The stairway is more than stone steps — it is a bridge to what once stood, reawakening the spirit of a city not only buried, but skyscraper-like in ambition.

Through digital “twins” of the houses, researchers offer glimpses of interiors that vanished long ago. The reconstructed tower of the House of Thiasus, rising perhaps 12 m or more above the street, implies sophisticated architecture where elite residents could entertain, observe the surroundings, or simply retreat from the bustle below.

What matters is more than bricks and beams — it is a living memory reborn. These reconstructions invite us to step in the shoes of the original inhabitants: to picture the rustle of togas on marble steps, the scent of sea air wafting through windows, and the echo of conversation rising above rooftops.

At the same time, the stairway is a sober reminder of fragility. Time, catastrophe, and neglect erased entire floors — turning lofty towers into memories of twigs and ash. What remains requires careful work, sensitive conservation, and respect for what might yet be lost again to weather, humid air, or human error.

As digital archaeology continues to breathe life into what was thought gone, Pompeii’s story grows richer: a city not just trapped in death, but revived in imagination. Today, when we peer at these ruins, we are not just seeing stones — we see stairways that once led home.
