French MPs Approve Assisted-Dying Law With Strict Rules After Years of Debate

French MPs approved an assisted-dying bill by 291 to 241, setting up a legal pathway for eligible adults under tightly defined criteria. The law would apply to those with a “serious and incurable” life-threatening illness in an advanced or terminal stage causing constant physical or psychological suffering. A patient must request it freely to a doctor, followed by consultation and a two-day reflection period. After that, the lethal substance is self-administered or, if needed, provided by a doctor or nurse.
