The President, the Husband, and a Fourteen-Minute Debut

There is a particular kind of scrutiny that attaches to the first appearance at the White House lectern—a moment when a new press secretary must demonstrate not only command of the administration's message but the dexterity to field questions from a press corps that has seen many such debuts. Katie Zacharia stepped into that role on Tuesday morning, four days after being named to succeed Karoline Leavitt. Her appearance lasted fourteen minutes, included a slip of the tongue that drew laughter, and ended before the scheduled departure of the president she was there to represent .

Zacharia, a forty-one-year-old conservative commentator and lawyer, began by reading from a prepared script for roughly eight minutes. She thanked President Trump for his trust, said she had "wanted to work for him for a very long time," and highlighted his policies on energy, tariffs, and immigration . She described her role as an opportunity to "amplify, multiply and expand upon President Trump's incredible agenda for the American people" .

When she opened the room to questions, she called on only three reporters, selecting outlets from a list she held: Breitbart News, Fox News, and The Daily Mail . Her first question came from Breitbart's Nick Gilbertson about the president's midterm campaign schedule. Her second, from Fox News' Peter Doocy, asked whether the United States had stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine. Zacharia said she would "have to get back to" him on that .

The moment that drew the most attention came in response to a question about balancing the demands of the job with raising four children. "The idea of not spending evenings with my kids is completely unacceptable," she said, before mistakenly referring to the president as her husband. "So my president — excuse me, my husband — is out here" . She recovered with a joke, calling it "a good one," and then praised Trump as "the most family-friendly president we've ever had" .

She did make one piece of news: she confirmed that Trump had asked Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece, to resign. "She has been a wonderful asset to the team and we wish her well," Zacharia said, declining to provide further details .

She ended the briefing by telling reporters that Trump was heading to Marine One for a trip to Alaska, and that they could ask him their questions there. The president was not scheduled to depart for several hours . Trump later praised her performance, saying, "I thought she did excellent. She did very good" .

Reactions were mixed. CNN's Kaitlin Collins described the briefing as "bizarre," and independent journalist Aaron Rupar wrote on X that it was "brutally bad" . A former Trump administration official called it a "train wreck" in a message to The Independent . White House Communications Director Stephen Cheung offered a different assessment, writing on X that it was "a tremendous start" .

Zacharia's predecessor, Karoline Leavitt, left the role in August and is joining Fox News as an on-air contributor. Zacharia previously worked as a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security and as a senior communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group .
