Gloria Kowalewicz was eight when she was abducted while walking to church in 1960. Her body was found in a Palos Hills forest preserve, and the murder remained unsolved for more than 65 years. Chicago police say DNA analysis and a fingerprint preserved from her purse identified Thomas F. McInerney Jr., a former officer who retired as a violent-crimes detective in 1987. McInerney died in Las Vegas in 2006, aged 70, and cannot face prosecution. Police said the identification may bring some closure to those who knew Gloria.
