Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro criticised President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s ban on sports betting and online casino games, calling it a threat to legal certainty. Speaking in Brasília on October 7, Bolsonaro argued that authorities should target unlicensed operators rather than companies that entered Brazil’s regulated market. He also accused Lula of abruptly changing policy ahead of the election. Bolsonaro said he would prohibit online casinos if elected but allow sports betting. He and Lula are due to face each other in the October 25 runoff.
