Explosions and Heavy Gunfire Rock Niger Capital as Gunmen Target Airport and Military Base

NIAMEY, Niger — Heavy gunfire and explosions erupted across several parts of Niger’s capital, Niamey, early on Saturday morning, August 29, 2026 after armed assailants launched a coordinated assault targeting DioriHamani International Airport, Military Base 101, and the perimeter around the presidential palace.

The pre-dawn offensive, which began around 1:00 AM local time, unleashed sustained exchanges of fire that echoed across the city for several hours, terrifying residents and prompting a major security deployment.

According to regional security sources and local eyewitnesses, the attackers struck the perimeter of DioriHamani International Airport before attempting to breach the heavily fortified military installation known as Base 101, located within the airport complex. Concurrently, persistent gunfire and blasts were reported near the Plateau administrative district, home to the presidential palace and the national broadcasting headquarters.

Video footage circulated online showed armored vehicles being deployed to reinforce critical access points, while military units engaged in prolonged firefights with the insurgents.

Bana Wagana Ibrahim, a deputy in the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) Parliament, confirmed that Base 101 had come under target but stated that defense forces countered the raid.

"Another attack on Base 101, and once again our defense and security forces ensured a controlled situation," Ibrahim posted on social media.

Security officials reported that several attackers were "neutralized" during the battle, while others fled into surrounding areas. Counter-terrorism units have launched sweeping search operations across Niamey to locate remaining suspects.

The assault marks another direct blow to the capital's central infrastructure. Niamey's airport complex has faced repeated security breaches over the past year amidst an ongoing insurgency by groups linked to al-Qaeda and Islamic State.

The ruling military junta, led by General AbdourahamaneTiani since a July 2023 coup, has shifted away from traditional Western security alliances, forming a military bloc with neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso. Authorities have not yet released official casualty figures as operations remain ongoing.
