Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reportedly given each NATO leader attending the Ankara summit a personal, engraved revolver paired with a box of live ammunition, presented as a gift in connection with the event. The firearms were engraved with leaders’ names, according to reports describing the gesture as part of a set of similar gifts delivered to heads of state.
One recipient said the weapon could not be brought back to his home country and therefore would need to be decommissioned. The situation reportedly hinged on import and firearms regulations, despite Erdogan providing a written note waiving Turkey’s export controls to allow the gift to leave the country.
The report says the episode is markedly different from the conventional items often handed out at NATO summits, which in recent years have included food and other symbolic packages rather than weapons.
