Cordoba, Argentina— Three members of a family were killed in a head-on collision on Route 9 in Córdoba Province on October 16, 2026, and the wreckage blocked both lanes for more than two hours. The crash was violent. Both vehicles were destroyed.
Córdoba Provincial Police said the family's car was traveling north toward Jesús María when it collided head-on with a pickup truck crossing from the opposite direction near kilometer 745. The impact occurred on a straight section with clear visibility. Skid marks were minimal.
First responders found the family car crushed against the guardrail. Two adults and a child, all related, died inside. The pickup driver was taken to the Hospital de Urgencias with severe injuries. He is under police custody while investigators work. Alcohol testing is pending.
A witness driving behind the pickup told officers, "The truck moved to overtake, then the other car was right there. There was no time to brake." Overtaking on Route 9 is common despite double lines. Truck traffic has increased this season due to harvest hauling.
La Nación reported that Route 9 remains one of Argentina's deadliest highways, linking Buenos Aires to the northwest. Head-on crashes account for a large share of fatalities, especially near Córdoba's agricultural belt where slow trucks and fast cars share one carriageway per direction.
The family's vehicle was registered in Córdoba capital. Relatives were notified late morning. A statement from the police press office said, "We are reconstructing the dynamics with accidentology experts. One hypothesis is improper overtaking. We are not ruling out distraction."
Forensic teams photographed the scene, measured impact points, and collected debris over 80 meters. The prosecutor on duty ordered blood samples and mechanical inspections for both vehicles. The road was reopened after tow trucks removed the chassis.
Local mayors have demanded duplication of this stretch for years. The project is approved but unfunded. Signs warn of head-on risk. Drivers ignore them.
The investigation now centers on the pickup's maneuver and whether fatigue played a role. The family will be buried together.
