Bolivia Bus Crash Near Oruro: Collision With Freight Truck Kills Four, Several Injured, Investigation Launched

Oruro, Bolivia— Four people were killed when a passenger bus collided with a freight truck near Oruro on October 16, 2026, and the highway between La Paz and Oruro was blocked by twisted metal for hours. The crash was head-on. Speed was high.

Transit Police said the bus was traveling south toward Oruro when it struck a northbound truck carrying ore concentrate near kilometer 190. The front of the bus caved in. The truck's cabin detached. Both drivers died on impact. Two passengers in the front rows also died.

Los Tiempos reported that fog and a light drizzle had reduced visibility that morning on the altiplano. The road is two lanes, straight, with heavy truck traffic from mines. Overtaking is frequent and risky. There is no median.

Survivors said the bus had been swerving to avoid potholes. One injured passenger told local radio, "It moved, then the truck was right there. We hit hard." Paramedics from Oruro and Caracollo responded with five ambulances. Eight injured were taken to Hospital General San Juan de Dios.

A police traffic investigator at the scene said, "We are measuring braking distances and collecting statements. Initial evidence suggests invasion of the opposite lane." He declined to assign responsibility before technical reports. Both tachographs were recovered.

The freight company, based in Potosí, said its driver was experienced and the truck had passed inspection last week. The bus company, a well-known interdepartmental operator, said it will cover funeral and medical costs and is cooperating. Its safety record is under review.

The La Paz-Oruro highway is a critical freight corridor. Crashes there are common, often involving buses and heavy trucks. Authorities have promised widening for years. The project remains delayed. Speed controls are limited.

By afternoon, cranes lifted the wreckage. The road reopened to one lane. Families arrived at the hospital morgue to identify bodies. The altiplano wind was strong.

The investigation now focuses on road conditions, driver hours, and whether either vehicle was overloaded. No arrests have been made.
