Ayacucho Ravine Horror: Interprovincial Bus Crashes Into Deep Gorge, Eight Dead, Twenty Injured

Ayacucho, Peru— An interprovincial bus crashed into a ravine in Ayacucho on October 16, 2026, leaving eight dead and 20 injured, and emergency teams spent hours pulling survivors up a loose, rock-covered slope. The bus was on a high-altitude route. The drop was more than 100 meters.

The National Police Highway Division said the vehicle was traveling from Lima toward Ayacucho when it missed a curve near kilometer 312 of the Libertadores highway. It broke through a metal guardrail and rolled into the gorge. The impact flattened the roof. Luggage and bodies were thrown clear.

Firefighters from Ayacucho and nearby Vinchos responded with ropes and stretchers. The first rescue took 40 minutes. The last took three hours. A police sergeant at the edge said, "We can see the bus, but getting down is dangerous. Rocks keep falling." A drone was used to map the wreck.

Survivors described a loud rattle, then a tilt. "The bus shook, then went sideways. People shouted. Then we were falling," one injured passenger told La República from a clinic bed. He suffered a broken leg. The driver is among the dead, according to preliminary identification.

La República reported that the route is known for fog, tight curves, and driver fatigue from overnight shifts. Companies operate on thin margins and tight schedules. Maintenance checks are logged but rarely audited in real time. This same corridor has had three major crashes this year.

The Regional Health Directorate said 12 injured were taken to the Ayacucho Regional Hospital, eight to a local health center. Two are in critical condition with head trauma. The hospital called for blood donors. Families began arriving at dawn, looking for names on a handwritten list.

The bus operator, a firm based in Lima, issued a short statement saying it is cooperating and will cover medical costs. It claimed the bus had passed technical inspection in September. That claim will be verified against Sutran records. The vehicle's tachograph was recovered.

Prosecutors opened an investigation for negligent homicide. They will examine braking systems, tire condition, and driver hours. The Ministry of Transport said it will send inspectors to the company's depot.

The highway remains partially closed. A crane is trying to lift the chassis. At the bottom of the ravine, personal items are still being collected.
