Toronto, Canada— A commercial truck collided with a city bus in Toronto Monday, leaving 14 passengers injured and shutting down a busy intersection as emergency crews pulled people from a torn-open bus during rush hour. The impact was hard.
The crash happened around 8:05 a.m. at the intersection of Finch Avenue and Keele Street in North York. The TTC bus was turning left with about 30 passengers aboard when a dump truck heading straight hit its midsection. The bus spun and its side panels buckled. Windows shattered.
Paramedics said 14 people were hurt, with three in serious condition with fractures and head injuries. No deaths were reported. A passenger who was standing said, "I was holding the rail, then I was on the floor. Glass everywhere. People were on top of each other."
The truck driver was not injured and remained at the scene. Police said he passed a roadside sobriety check. Investigators are reviewing dashcam footage and traffic light timing. Early focus is on whether the truck ran a yellow or the bus turned late.
TTC service was suspended on the route. Buses were diverted. Traffic backed up for kilometers. The intersection is known for heavy truck traffic serving industrial areas nearby. Residents have complained about speeding trucks for years.
The bus was a standard 40-foot diesel model. Its side was ripped open from door to rear axle. Emergency crews stabilized the bus with blocks before evacuating passengers. Firefighters cut a window frame to get to a woman trapped under a seat.
The city said it will review signal timing and add a protected left turn if warranted. The trucking company said it is cooperating and has pulled the driver from duty pending results. The truck had passed inspection in September.
Transit safety is under scrutiny. The TTC reported a rise in collisions with third-party trucks this year. Union leaders said operators need more time to make safe turns without pressure to stay on schedule.
Tonight the intersection remains closed as forensic officers map skid marks and debris under lights.
