Coastal Waters Tragedy Near Gold Coast, Boat Mishap Kills One, Three Survivors Pulled Aboard

Gold Coast, Australia— A small recreational fishing boat overturned in choppy coastal waters off the Gold Coast at around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, drowning one man and leaving three others clinging to the hull until fishermen hauled them aboard.

The 5.5-meter aluminum boat was heading back to the Currumbin boat ramp when a larger swell hit the stern. The vessel swamped and flipped, throwing all four occupants into the water. None were wearing life jackets at the moment of capsize, according to initial reports.

A nearby trawler crew saw the upturned hull and diverted. They pulled three survivors from the water, one unconscious but breathing. The fourth man, 58, was found face-down 20 meters away and could not be revived. Paramedics declared him dead on the beach.

"The sea turned quickly. We saw the tinny flip. We threw ropes and a life ring. They were exhausted," said trawler skipper Ben Hartley, who radioed Marine Rescue. His deckhand performed CPR while heading to shore.

Water Police said conditions were moderate with a 1.5-meter swell and an outgoing tide. The boat was slightly overloaded and had a makeshift canopy that may have affected stability. The vessel has been towed for inspection.

"Life jackets were on board but not worn. That is a common factor we see. A swell from behind can fill an open boat in seconds," Senior Sergeant Michael Keane of Queensland Water Police said.

Volunteer Marine Rescue deployed two vessels and a rescue helicopter that circled the area to check for additional debris. The search was scaled back by noon after all persons were accounted for.

Family members gathered at the boat ramp as investigators interviewed survivors. The Gold Coast City Council said it would review ramp signage on life jacket rules.

Queensland records an average of 12 boating drowning deaths per year, many in small open boats within two kilometers of shore. Authorities will prepare a report for the coroner.

The Water Police unit will examine hull integrity, weight distribution, and whether the bilge pump was operational.
