Toronto, Canada— Police taped off a wide stretch of Dufferin Street and Queen Street West just after 11:40 p.m. Monday after a driver struck a pedestrian in the crosswalk and drove away without stopping.
The victim, a man in his 40s, was crossing northbound when a dark-colored sedan traveling eastbound hit him and continued through the intersection. Paramedics found him unresponsive in the middle lane. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Traffic officers said the impact threw the victim several meters. Debris from a side mirror and front bumper was recovered at the curb. Those pieces are being examined to narrow the vehicle model.
"We have a mirror housing and paint transfer. That gives us a year range. We need video to close the gap," Const. Laura Simmons said at a midnight briefing. She said the driver would face criminal charges for leaving the scene.
Witnesses described a sedan moving fast with its headlights off. One delivery cyclist said he heard the thud and saw the car swerve around the body before accelerating. He stopped and called 911.
The intersection is a high-traffic mix of streetcars, cyclists, and pedestrians. Residents have complained for months about speeding after 10 p.m. The city installed a speed camera two blocks south last year but not at this crossing.
Major Collision investigators used a total station to map the scene and collected surveillance video from a convenience store and a transit shelter. They are also asking drivers who passed through between 11:30 and 11:50 p.m. to submit dashcam footage.
The victim’s name has not been released pending family notification. A white sheet covered the body for more than two hours while investigators worked under portable lights. A streetcar line was suspended and replaced by shuttle buses.
Toronto police have logged 38 pedestrian deaths this year in hit-and-run or failure-to-yield cases. Advocates have pressed for more protected crossings on this corridor.
Investigators expect to release a vehicle description Tuesday afternoon and are checking nearby body shops for recent repair inquiries.
