China Executes 11 Members of Myanmar Scam Mafia

China has carried out executions of 11 members of the Ming Family, a criminal organization known for running large-scale scam operations and illegal gambling dens in Myanmar. They were sentenced to death in September 2021 for serious crimes including homicide, unlawful detention, fraud and operating illegal casinos.

During their reign, the Ming family controlled Laukkaung, a border city that had become a hub for casinos and prostitutes. Their activities were reported to have generated more than $10 billion in revenue between 2016 and 2022. However, their reign ended abruptly in 2020 when they were arrested by local militia amid Myanmar's civil war. They were then handed over to the Chinese authorities.

Over the years, the operations of the Ming group had ensnared thousands of workers from China, many of them being trafficked into online scamming schemes targeting victims worldwide. This led to public outrage and concern in China, especially after events like the case of a famous Chinese actor who had been lured to Myanmar on false pretenses and later died there.

In November of last year, Chinese courts rejected their appeals against death sentences, emphasizing the severity of crimes committed by this group. The ruling also highlighted the government's determination to crack down on organized crime groups that threaten citizens' safety.

These executions serve as a warning to other criminal organizations, demonstrating China's resolve to eradicate scam operations across its borders and especially in Myanmar.
