Causeway Bay Renovation Scaffolding Collapse: Two Construction Workers Injured in Fall Today

Hong Kong—A section of bamboo scaffolding erected along a commercial building facade collapsed in Causeway Bay on October 5, 2026, injuring two renovation workers and crushing a ground-floor shop canopy. Emergency responders rushed to the site near Hennessy Road after receiving reports of falling structural bamboo poles and nylon safety netting.

Firefighters pulled two male construction laborers, aged 41 and 48, from the debris pile on the sidewalk. Paramedics stabilized both workers at the scene for limb fractures and head contusions before transporting them to Ruttonjee Hospital in Wan Chai for urgent treatment.

Police officers immediately closed one lane of pedestrian traffic and cordoned off the building frontage to prevent secondary injuries from loose scaffolding materials hanging overhead. Buildings Department inspectors arrived on site to evaluate the structural stability of the remaining bamboo frame secured to the upper floors.

High winds and degraded structural tie-backs appear to have compromised the bamboo matrix at the third-story level, causing a massive section to buckle outward. Pedestrians on the busy shopping street fled into neighboring retail arcades as bamboo poles crashed onto the sidewalk below.

Labour Department safety officers initiated an immediate workplace safety investigation, seizing contractor maintenance logs and site inspection reports. Inspectors ordered all exterior renovation work on the commercial structure suspended until a complete safety audit is filed.

"Buildings Department and Labour Department officers are conducting a joint inspection to determine if improper anchoring contributed to this structural failure," confirmed a Labour Department official supervising the site clearance.

Contractor crews equipped with heavy cutters systematically dismantled the remaining loose bamboo poles under the supervision of structural engineers. Urban clearance teams gathered broken bamboo poles, safety netting, and fallen masonry from the pedestrian walkway to reopen the lane.

Law enforcement officers logged statements from shop managers and site supervisors regarding safety protocols observed prior to the collapse. The Labour Department issued a work suspension notice to the main contractor as formal safety inquiries continue.
