East End, Cayman Islands— Two people were confirmed dead at 9:45 p.m. on October 28, 2026, after carbon monoxide filled a residence in East End, Grand Cayman, sending three others to hospital with poisoning.
Police and fire services said they were called to a home on Sea View Road after a neighbor reported screaming and a strong smell. Inside, they found five occupants unconscious. Two were already dead. The other three were breathing but confused. They were carried out wearing gas masks.
The Cayman Islands Fire Service said preliminary checks found a faulty generator running inside an enclosed garage attached to the house. The island had intermittent power cuts Tuesday due to maintenance. The generator vent was blocked. Carbon monoxide levels inside measured above 300 ppm, a lethal concentration.
"The residence had no working carbon monoxide detector," said a police spokesperson on scene. "We are investigating the source and whether the generator was improperly installed." He said the victims were adults, part of an extended family. Their ages were not released pending next-of-kin notification.
Neighbors said the family moved to East End last year. One neighbor, Marlon Ebanks, said he saw the generator running all day. "We told them last week it was too close to the house," he said. "The power was out, they needed light." He said he heard an alarm around 8 p.m. but thought it was a car.
Paramedics took the three survivors to Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town. Hospital officials said two are in critical but stable condition and one is in serious condition. All received oxygen therapy. Fire crews ventilated the house for two hours before allowing entry. The home is now sealed as a crime scene is not suspected, but safety inspectors will examine it.
The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service said no foul play is suspected. The Department of Environmental Health will test other homes on the street with similar setups. The incident is the second carbon monoxide death in the territory this year. In March, a tourist died on Seven Mile Beach from a boat generator.
The community in East End is small and tight. By midnight, relatives gathered outside the police tape. A pastor from a local church arrived to pray with them. Police asked residents to check detectors and never run fuel-burning equipment indoors.
Investigators will release an official report after autopsy results. The house remains closed. Power crews said the area's electricity was restored at 10:30 p.m., after the victims were removed.
