SOFIA, Bulgaria — A sudden drone attack targeted two foreign-flagged commercial cargo vessels approximately 70 nautical miles off the coast of Byala in the Black Sea, sinking one ship and leaving another heavily damaged.
The strikes took place within Bulgaria’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), marking a dramatic geographic expansion of maritime security threats in the western Black Sea.
The Togolese-flagged cargo vessel Alfa Watan sustained critical structural damage during the early morning strike and sank. Bulgarian maritime search and rescue units launched a multi-agency operation involving patrol vessels, lifeboats, and aircraft to locate the crew. However, search efforts were subsequently suspended after first responder's recovered empty life rafts and debris without finding trace of the missing sailors.
Meanwhile, the second vessel—the Palau-flagged cargo ship Able—caught fire following a direct impact. Nearby merchant ships, including the Bulgarian ferry Dioscuria, rushed to render aid, successfully evacuating all 18 crew members from the burning ship. Two sailors suffered severe injuries and were airlifted to a regional hospital in Varna for emergency medical care.
Bulgarian officials convened an emergency security council in Sofia following the strikes to assess maritime safety risks and potential environmental impacts. Authorities noted that while commercial shipping routes through the Black Sea have faced heightened risks, this marks the first direct strike on merchant vessels operating within Bulgaria's maritime economic zone.
Investigating agencies and naval experts continue to analyze wreckage and tracking data to determine the origin and flight trajectories of the drones involved. Regional leaders condemned the attacks on non-military commercial transit, warning that unprovoked strikes against neutral merchant ships severely threaten global shipping lanes and regional stability.
The incident has drawn swift reactions from international shipping coalitions and global insurance markets, with several major maritime insurers temporarily suspending coverage for commercial vessels operating in the western Black Sea. In response to the escalating danger, NATO naval command announced increased reconnaissance flights and heightened maritime patrols along the eastern flank to safeguard international shipping corridors and deter further attacks on commercial traffic.
