Beneath America’s Summer Momentum: Consumer Spending and AI Investment Lift the Economy Beyond Earlier Expectations

Economic growth is often described through a single number, but behind that figure lies a collection of ordinary movements: people buying goods, companies expanding equipment, and businesses building the infrastructure of tomorrow. In the United States, the latest revision to those movements has brought the second quarter into clearer focus.

The U.S. economy grew at an annualized rate of 2.2% in the second quarter, according to the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis. The figure was revised upward from an earlier estimate of 1.5%, while economists surveyed by Reuters had expected the previous estimate to remain unchanged.

The revision reflects stronger consumer spending than initially recorded. Household consumption, which represents more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, increased at a 3.8% annualized rate during the April-to-June period, compared with the earlier estimate of 3.4%.

That acceleration came after a much quieter first quarter, when consumer spending grew at an annualized rate of only 0.7%. The second-quarter figures therefore show a substantial change in the pace at which households contributed to overall economic activity.

Business investment also played an important role. Spending connected with the expansion of artificial-intelligence infrastructure has become an increasingly visible part of the investment landscape, as companies continue to allocate capital toward computing equipment, data infrastructure and related technologies.

The revised figures also showed that final sales to private domestic purchasers, a measure that excludes trade, inventories and government spending, increased at a 4.6% annualized rate in the second quarter. That was higher than the previously reported 4.2% pace.

The first quarter was revised as well. Economic growth for January through March was raised to 2.5%, from the previous estimate of 2.1%. The revisions were part of a broader update to U.S. national economic data extending back to 2021.

Still, the stronger growth figures exist alongside signs of pressure on American households. Higher energy costs and inflation have complicated the consumer picture, while a September Conference Board survey showed consumer confidence falling to a level near a 12½-year low.

The combination creates a more complicated economic landscape than the headline GDP number alone suggests. Spending has remained resilient, while households are also confronting higher costs and changing expectations about the economy.

For businesses, meanwhile, the continuing investment in AI infrastructure represents a longer-term shift in where capital is being directed. The technology buildout is becoming part of the broader investment cycle, connecting the performance of the economy with changes taking place inside factories, offices and data centers.

The second-quarter revision therefore offers a clearer picture of an economy that continued to expand at a solid pace, even as different pressures moved beneath the surface. Consumer demand and technological investment provided important support, leaving the United States entering the second half of the year with growth stronger than previously estimated.
