Behind the Badge, a Husband and Father of Three

There is a particular kind of stillness that settles over an interstate after a shooting—the ordinary hum of traffic replaced by the crackle of radios, the flash of blue lights, the slow, deliberate work of investigators marking a scene. On Interstate 65 in Warren County, Kentucky, that stillness arrived on a Monday afternoon, and it carried with it a loss that no agency is ever prepared to hold.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Hayden Phillips, Unit 369, was killed Monday after a shooting on I-65 North near mile marker 38, near Smiths Grove. Phillips was assigned to KSP Post 3 in Bowling Green and was a graduate of Cadet Class 103 .

The incident was first reported as a "trooper-involved shooting." A Blue Alert was issued around 3:30 p.m., alerting the public that a suspect was wanted in connection with a "severe attack" against a member of law enforcement. A Blue Alert is an emergency notification used when an officer has been killed, seriously injured, or is missing in the line of duty .

Authorities identified the suspect as Emonnie Branch, described as driving a bluish-gray 2025 Honda Civic with temporary Alabama plates. The vehicle was last seen traveling north on I-65 near the 75-mile marker. Police advised the public to avoid the suspect, who should be considered armed and dangerous, and to call 911 if seen .

The northbound lanes of I-65 were closed at the 30-mile marker, with drivers rerouted to Exit 30. The interstate remained shut down as of late Monday afternoon .

KSP Commissioner Phillip Burnett Jr. issued a statement confirming Phillips's death. "His dedication to duty and commitment to the Commonwealth will not be forgotten," Burnett said. "Our hearts break for Trooper Phillips' family, loved ones, and fellow troopers as we grieve this tremendous loss. We will carry his memory with us, honor the life he lived and the badge he wore, and stand together as an agency to support this family in the days ahead" .

Governor Andy Beshear confirmed Phillips was shot and offered condolences. "Hayden was a hero who dedicated himself to protecting our commonwealth," Beshear said. "Even more, he was a devoted husband and loving father to three children. Let us wrap our arms around this family during this unimaginable time" .

Attorney General Russell Coleman confirmed that detectives from his office were on the scene. "Behind the badge was a man with a family, brothers and sisters in gray, and a grateful Commonwealth," Coleman said. "Detectives from the Attorney General's Office were on the scene and will continue to support our Kentucky State Police colleagues" .

The investigation remains ongoing. Phillips is the first Kentucky State Trooper killed in the line of duty in recent memory, and his death has left an agency and a community grieving. The northbound lanes of I-65 remain closed, and the search for the suspect continues.
