French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said two employees of France’s embassy in Tehran were aggressively harassed and detained by Iranian security forces on Sunday. In a statement posted Monday, Barrot said the staff members were detained and interrogated for several hours without reason, and one was physically assaulted during the encounter. Barrot added that the officials were eventually allowed to return to the French embassy and were safe, and that they would travel back to France soon. He warned the incident could have consequences.
