Andy Burnham will become the UK’s next prime minister after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, where Charles formally asked him to form a government. Burnham takes over from Keir Starmer, who announced his resignation as Labour leader in June and formally stepped down after advising the king. Under Britain’s parliamentary system, Labour’s leader becomes prime minister because the party governs with a majority. Burnham is expected to begin appointing cabinet ministers soon after taking office.
