Andean Landslide Disaster: Three Dead After Massive Mudslide Buries Rural Highway Route in Cuenca

Cuenca, Ecuador—A massive landslide triggered by torrential rains buried a critical rural highway route outside Cuenca on Saturday morning, leaving three people dead beneath tons of mud and rock. The hillside gave way without warning, sending a catastrophic wall of debris crashing directly across the winding mountain road and sweeping a passing vehicle down the ravine.

National Secretariat for Risk Management teams, firefighters, and local municipal workers deployed heavy excavation equipment to the disaster zone, digging through thick layers of silt. First responders confirmed that three occupants of the buried vehicle perished from impact trauma and asphyxiation before rescue units could reach them.

The landslide severed transportation links between rural agricultural settlements and the urban center of Cuenca, stranding dozens of commuter and cargo vehicles. Emergency engineering units established roadblocks on either side of the slide area to prevent secondary collapses as unstable earth continued to shift down the slope.

"Continuous rainfall saturated the mountain soils past their breaking point, causing this sudden and destructive debris flow," said a regional civil defense coordinator at the site. "Our excavators are working around the clock to clear the roadway, but the terrain remains highly unstable."

Provincial authorities expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and mobilized emergency food and medical supplies for communities temporarily isolated by the road closure. Geotechnical teams initiated aerial drone surveys of the upper slope to assess ongoing risks of further slides before heavy clearing operations proceed.

Transportation ministries urged motorists to avoid regional mountain corridors until weather conditions stabilize and thorough safety inspections are completed across vulnerable routes.

Cleanup operations continue under overcast skies as crews strive to restore basic connectivity to the affected Andean district.
