Across Digital Borders: Brazil’s Pix Moves Toward a Possible New Connection With Europe’s Instant Payment Network

Money has become increasingly difficult to see. It moves quietly through phones, screens, bank systems, and digital networks, often crossing financial boundaries without the physical movement once associated with a payment. In Brazil, the country’s Pix system may be approaching another step in that evolution, as Brazilian and European authorities examine a possible connection between their instant-payment networks.

The Central Bank of Brazil and the European Central Bank are studying whether Pix could eventually be linked with Europe’s TARGET Instant Payment Settlement, or TIPS. The discussions are still preliminary, but they represent a possible first cross-border expansion for Pix.

According to people familiar with the discussions cited by Reuters, a pilot project could potentially begin in 2028 if the technical work advances as planned. The European Central Bank has confirmed that it is conducting a preliminary investigation into the possibility of interlinking TIPS with Pix.

Pix itself has changed the rhythm of everyday payments in Brazil since its launch in late 2020. The system allows real-time transfers, including free person-to-person transactions, while merchants can benefit from lower transaction costs compared with traditional card-payment structures.

Its rapid adoption has also changed the competitive landscape of Brazil’s financial system. As more people have used Pix for everyday transactions, the role of traditional debit and credit cards has declined in some areas, affecting international payment networks that have long occupied a central position in consumer transactions.

The possibility of international integration reflects the broader reach Pix has developed. Brazil’s central bank has already signed information-sharing agreements with 65 foreign counterparts and has indicated interest in examining connections between Pix and similar payment systems abroad.

For consumers, the most important part of such a development would eventually be its simplicity. If different instant-payment networks can communicate securely and efficiently, cross-border transactions could become faster and less dependent on traditional intermediaries. But reaching that point requires technical standards, regulatory coordination, security measures, and agreement between institutions on how the systems should interact.

For now, the possible Pix-TIPS connection remains a study rather than a completed project. Yet the discussion itself shows how quickly a payment system created for domestic use can become part of a much wider digital financial landscape. What began on Brazilian smartphones could, over time, become another bridge between payment networks separated by an ocean.
