A Halloween party, a noise complaint, and a night that ended in gunfire.

There is a particular sorrow that settles over a college town when a night meant for costumes and music ends in gunfire. Boulder is not a city accustomed to this kind of violence. Its police chief said as much on Sunday morning, standing before reporters with the weariness of someone who had spent the night piecing together a tragedy. "This is abnormal for Boulder," Chief Stephen Redfearn said. "Thankfully, we're not accustomed to gun violence" . But on Saturday night, just before 11:30 p.m., shots were fired inside a home on Marine Street in the University Hill neighborhood, steps from campus. Two nineteen-year-old University of Colorado students were hit. One died at the hospital. The other remained in critical condition .

The evening had begun as a registered house party, the kind of gathering that happens in a college neighborhood on Halloween. A live band played. Hundreds of people filled the home. Police received a noise complaint shortly before 10 p.m. and arrived to find the party had crossed the threshold of a nuisance. Organizers were ticketed. One highly intoxicated person was taken into custody. The crowd dispersed .

But a core group remained, including the renters. And about ninety minutes later, police began receiving calls about a shooting. Investigators believe a group of people tried to force their way into the home, and then shots were fired inside . By the time officers arrived, two young men were wounded. They applied a tourniquet to one. Both were rushed to Boulder Community Hospital. One did not survive .

On Sunday, police released images of two persons of interest, men captured on video shortly before the shooting. One wore a red hooded sweatshirt under a black jacket. The other wore a black shirt featuring Art the Clown and a silver chain. "It is imperative that we speak with them," Redfearn said, declining to call them suspects . About twenty witnesses were interviewed. The university's dean of students reached out to those directly affected. Campus resources were made available .

This is Boulder's first homicide of the year. That fact, stated plainly in the police briefing, carries its own weight. For a city that rarely confronts such violence, the shock is not abstract. It is personal. It is a parent receiving a call no parent should receive. It is a friend who tried to save a life and could not. It is a community learning that the ordinary rituals of a Saturday night can end in a way no one imagined.

The investigation continues. Police are asking anyone with photos or video from the party to come forward. Patrols have been increased around University Hill. The two young men who were shot have not been publicly identified. One is dead, and the other is fighting. The questions—who fired, why, what argument or grievance or impulse led to this—remain unanswered. For now, there is only the fact of the loss, and a city trying to hold it.
