A car left the road before dawn, and two families woke to absence

There is a stretch of road in Aylmer where the city gives way to something quieter—trees along the boulevard, the river not far off, the kind of route that feels ordinary until it isn't. Just before two o'clock on Friday morning, a car carrying five people traveled eastbound on boulevard des Allumettières, near des Grives. For reasons that remain unknown, the vehicle left the road. By the time the sun rose, two people were dead and a community was left to absorb the weight of a night that changed everything for several families.

Gatineau police said one person was pronounced dead at the scene. A second died at the hospital after being transported by ambulance. Three other occupants were taken to hospital; one remains in serious but stable condition, while the others are believed to have sustained lesser injuries . The heavily damaged, light-colored car remained at the closed section of the road Friday morning as forensic investigators worked through the scene.

Police have not released the identities of the victims, citing respect for the families involved. They have also not determined why the vehicle left the roadway. The investigation is ongoing, with collision reconstruction specialists and forensic identification technicians conducting analyses . Anyone who witnessed the crash has been asked to contact Gatineau police's non-emergency line.

Boulevard des Allumettières is a key connector between Aylmer's western hub and downtown Gatineau. Eastbound lanes between chemin Vanier and des Grives were closed for much of Friday, while westbound lanes reopened. For commuters, the closure was an inconvenience. For those involved, the road has become something else entirely—a place to be revisited in memory, again and again, in the search for an answer that may never fully arrive.

There is a particular stillness that follows a fatal crash. The road reopens. The debris is cleared. The investigators file their reports. But in the homes of the five people who were in that car, time has been marked into before and after. Two families are planning funerals. One person is learning to recover from injuries. Others are left with the strange survivor's task of carrying forward what happened.

The cause of the crash has not been determined, and police have not speculated. What is known is simple and terrible: five people were in a car at two in the morning, and two of them did not come home.
