The Rain Fell, the Light Was Thin, and a Crosswalk Became a Threshold

Rain had been falling for hours, the kind of heavy, steady rain that turns asphalt into a mirror and narrows the world to what headlights can reach. Just after midnight on Sunday, a 45-year-old woman stepped into a marked crosswalk at Main Street and National Avenue. She was struck by a southbound SUV and thrown roughly thirty meters. Despite the efforts of paramedics and first responders, she died at the scene before one o'clock .

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. Alcohol and substance use are not believed to have been factors. What the investigation has not yet determined is whether the woman was crossing with a walk signal at the time . The darkness and the rain, police noted, made visibility difficult for everyone sharing the road that night.

It was the second pedestrian struck in Vancouver in three days. On Thursday, a seven-year-old girl was injured when she ran onto East Pender Street near Victoria Drive, darting between parked cars toward her parents' vehicle. The driver, traveling at roughly 20 km/h, did not see her. The girl was taken to hospital with minor injuries and has since been released .

Constable Megan Lui, in a statement following that earlier incident, offered words that now carry a heavier weight: "This incident is an important reminder for pedestrians to exercise additional caution and for drivers to stay vigilant, especially during darker morning and evening commutes." She also noted Halloween's approach, encouraging families to plan ahead and remind children to use crosswalks and stay visible .

The pattern is not unique to Vancouver. Across the country, the shift from autumn's amber light to winter's early dusk arrives each year with a quiet cost. Visibility shrinks. Reaction times stretch. The ordinary act of crossing a street becomes, for a season, something that asks more of everyone involved—more attention from drivers, more caution from those on foot, more patience from a city learning again how to share its roads in the dark.

The Vancouver Police Department's Accident Investigation Unit continues to examine the circumstances of Sunday's collision. No charges have been requested as the investigation remains open . The woman's name has not been released.
