Tragedy in Cappadocia: At Least 3 Dead After Massive Rock Collapse at Popular Tourist Site

GÖREME, Turkey — A tragic incident disrupted Turkey’s Republic Day holiday on Thursday, October 29, 2026, when a massive volcanic rock spire collapsed at the entrance of a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site in Cappadocia. The disaster left at least three people dead and five others injured.

The sudden rockfall occurred around 3:15 p.m. local time near a vehicle parking lot and entrance point close to the Göreme Open-Air Museum, one of the central attractions in the historic region.

Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud, booming crash before a towering rock spire gave way, sending a large volume of debris cascading down and billowing a massive cloud of dust over the crowded area. Because the collapse coincided with Republic Day, the area was heavily populated with holiday visitors and tourists exploring the famous geological formations.

Emergency responders—including specialized search-and-rescue units, medical personnel, and local police—rushed to the scene immediately following the collapse.

Nevşehir Governor Hüseyin Kök confirmed that two Turkish citizens and one foreign national lost their lives in the tragedy. Five additional individuals sustained injuries and were transported to regional hospitals for treatment.

Emergency crews operated through the night with heavy machinery and floodlights to clear rubble and ensure no additional victims were trapped beneath the debris.

"All our operations have been completed. We have finished all checks and inspections, and our teams have withdrawn after determining there is no further need to continue operations," Governor Kök announced after search efforts concluded.

Preliminary reports indicate that recent heavy rainfall in the region likely weakened the geological structure, triggering a localized landslide that caused the rock spire to detach.

Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek confirmed that the chief prosecutor's office has launched an official investigation into the incident. Geological experts and technical teams are scheduled to conduct comprehensive structural assessments to evaluate the safety of adjacent rock formations.

Cappadocia, famed worldwide for its unique "fairy chimney" rock structures and ancient underground cities, attracts millions of visitors annually. Authorities have temporarily cordoned off the immediate site as safety evaluations continue.
