A Canadian Returns, and the Station Welcomes Four New Voices

There is a moment, after hours of flight and the careful choreography of docking, when a spacecraft hatch opens and the human beings inside float into a new home. For the four astronauts of Crew-13, that moment arrived on Thursday evening, when they entered the International Space Station after a journey of nearly eight hours—the fastest trip from Earth to the orbital outpost ever achieved by an American spacecraft, according to NASA . The crew, comprising NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk, and Russian cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov, was welcomed with hugs and handshakes by the station's existing residents .

For Canada, the arrival carried particular significance. Kutryk is the first Canadian astronaut to board the ISS in years, and his presence returns the Canadian flag to the station . "It's been a while since a Canadian has been here," Kutryk said after crossing the threshold. "I cannot believe I'm here. I just cannot believe it, but it just feels really good to have the CSA back, the Canadian flag back, and I'm just looking forward to a good mission—after some sleep" . His remarks drew laughter from the crew, a moment of warmth in the precise, technical environment of orbital operations.

The Crew-13 mission, the thirteenth crew rotation flight conducted by SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft under NASA's Commercial Crew Program, launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 11:10 a.m. Eastern Time . The Dragon spacecraft docked with the station's Harmony module at approximately 7:06 p.m. Eastern, and the hatch was opened shortly after 9:19 p.m. . Russian cosmonaut Teteryatnikov was the first to enter, followed by Kutryk, Delaney, and Commander Watkins .

During their approximately six-month stay aboard the station, the crew will conduct a series of scientific experiments and technology demonstrations. According to NASA, these include studies of tissues derived from human stem cells to advance medicine and pharmaceutical research related to heart disease and Parkinson's disease, investigations into agricultural production in space, research on blood circulation abnormalities in microgravity, and testing of new diagnostic equipment designed to monitor crew health . These experiments contribute not only to the health and safety of astronauts during long-duration missions but also to potential applications on Earth.

The mission also reflects the continuing collaboration between nations in space, even amid geopolitical tensions on the ground. The crew includes representatives from NASA, the Canadian Space Agency, and Roscosmos, continuing a partnership that has endured for more than two decades aboard the ISS. Commander Watkins leads the mission, with Delaney serving as pilot and Kutryk and Teteryatnikov as mission specialists .

The Crew-13 astronauts join the Expedition 75 crew already aboard the station. They are expected to remain in orbit for approximately 180 days, returning to Earth in March 2027 . For Kutryk, the mission represents both a personal milestone and a national one—a return of Canadian presence to humanity's outpost in space after a period of absence. As he told his fellow crew members, there is "something profound about being trusted with the responsibility to operate this station" . The work now begins, in the quiet, continuous labor of science conducted at 17,500 miles per hour, 250 miles above the Earth.
