1. Between Satellites and the Moon, Türkiye Expands Its Space Ambitions Through Deeper Airbus Cooperation

Türkiye’s ambitions in space are gradually moving beyond the satellites already circling above the country. Discussions with Airbus now extend toward areas such as lunar exploration and human spaceflight, placing Türkiye’s developing space capabilities within a broader international network.

Airbus Defence and Space executive Carlo Mirra said the company was discussing expanded cooperation with Turkish institutions, including TÜBİTAK, according to reports from September 2026. The areas under discussion include satellite communications, lunar exploration and human spaceflight.

The conversations come as Türkiye prepares to host the 77th International Astronautical Congress in Antalya. The event provides an opportunity for Turkish institutions and companies to present their capabilities while meeting international space agencies, manufacturers and research organizations.

Satellite communications remain one of the more established areas of cooperation. Airbus has previously been involved in Türkiye’s satellite programs, giving the two sides an industrial relationship that could potentially support additional projects.

Lunar exploration represents a different level of ambition. Missions beyond low Earth orbit require technologies involving communications, navigation, propulsion, scientific instruments and mission control. They also tend to involve cooperation among multiple countries and organizations.

Human spaceflight adds another layer of technical requirements. Crew safety, life-support systems, spacecraft operations and training all require specialized knowledge and long development periods.

For Türkiye, international cooperation can provide a bridge between domestic capabilities and the wider global space industry. The country has been developing its own space institutions and companies, while seeking opportunities to participate in increasingly complex international projects.

Airbus has indicated that cooperation could take several forms, including direct industrial partnerships or arrangements involving Türkiye, the European Space Agency, the European Commission and other countries associated with Airbus.

The discussions should not be interpreted as confirmation of a finalized major lunar or human-spaceflight contract. They remain part of an ongoing process in which possible areas of cooperation are being examined.

Türkiye’s space ambitions have also gained another international connection through its signing of the Artemis Accords in August 2026, making it the 71st signatory to the framework for peaceful and transparent space exploration.

As the space industry becomes increasingly international, Türkiye’s challenge will be to convert institutional cooperation into technological capabilities, skilled personnel and sustainable industrial projects. The path from a satellite program to lunar exploration is long, but the conversations now taking place suggest that Türkiye is looking increasingly toward that distant horizon.
