Zurich, Switzerland: Major Multivehicle Collision on A1 Expressway During Heavy Afternoon Precipitation Kills Two

Zurich, Switzerland—Two motorists died Thursday afternoon when a major multivehicle collision brought traffic to a sudden halt on the A1 expressway amid torrential rain. The crash involved three passenger cars and a commercial delivery van, creating a chaotic chain-reaction pileup across all eastbound lanes just outside the metropolitan perimeter.

Heavy downpours reduced visibility to minimal levels while standing water created severe hydroplaning hazards along the asphalt corridor. Vehicles traveling at highway speeds encountered the stationary bottleneck before braking systems could counteract the slick surface conditions.

The impact crushed the front and rear cabins of the lead sedan, trapping multiple occupants inside twisted metal frames. Emergency dispatch centers received automated collision notifications at 3:15 PM, prompting the immediate dispatch of four ambulances, three fire rescue engines, and highway police patrols.

"Hydroplaning combined with sudden braking created an unavoidable chain reaction across three active lanes," stated Canton Police Inspector Urs Meier. "The force of the impacts resulted in severe structural intrusion into the passenger compartments."

Paramedics confirmed two individuals dead at the scene from acute blunt force trauma, while four other injured motorists were extracted and transported to regional trauma centers. Medical teams reported that two of the hospitalized survivors remain in critical condition with severe internal injuries.

Highway maintenance crews closed the eastbound A1 corridor entirely, diverting commuter traffic through secondary arterial roads and causing severe gridlock across the regional transit network. Heavy recovery cranes labored for hours to clear wrecked vehicle debris and spilled automotive fluids from the tarmac.

Accident reconstruction specialists utilized laser scanners and drone technology to document skid patterns, braking marks, and vehicle resting positions. Preliminary investigations indicate that excessive speed relative to the severe weather advisory played a major role in the initial impact.

Authorities reopened the affected expressway lanes late Thursday evening after structural engineers verified the safety of the roadway infrastructure. Criminal prosecutors opened a preliminary inquiry to review whether driver negligence contributed to the scale of the disaster.
