Auckland, New Zealand— Police confirmed a service station worker died on site late Wednesday after a vehicle allegedly struck him and then ran over him, turning a routine shift into a homicide investigation.
Officers were called to the forecourt just after 9:40 p.m. following reports of an altercation between staff and a driver. Witnesses told police the driver attempted to leave without paying for fuel. The worker stepped in front of the vehicle. The car accelerated.
The victim, a man in his early 40s, was pinned under the front wheels. Paramedics attempted resuscitation for nearly 30 minutes. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released his name pending formal identification and notification of next of kin.
A 28-year-old man was arrested three blocks from the station. He was found sitting in a damaged sedan with a flat front tire. Police said he was uninjured and uncooperative at first. He is now in custody and is expected to face charges of manslaughter, with more serious charges possible.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Sullivan said the scene showed clear signs of force. Tire marks cut across two fuel lanes. Security footage from the station, now in police possession, captured the entire sequence. Sullivan described the footage as graphic and critical.
Staff members were interviewed through the night. One co-worker said the victim had worked at the station for six years and was known for confronting theft. The co-worker said he shouted for the driver to stop. The company operator closed all its Auckland sites for 24 hours.
Police cordoned the station until Thursday morning. Forensic teams photographed the pumps, collected fuel receipts, and seized the alleged offending vehicle for mechanical inspection. The cordon drew a crowd of locals. Several left flowers at the edge of the tape.
WorkSafe New Zealand has been notified. The union representing retail workers said it has warned for years about fuel drive-offs and lone night shifts. It called the death preventable and demanded immediate safety changes across the sector.
The suspect remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Manukau District Court today. Police said they are still seeking additional dashcam footage from motorists who were at the station between 9:30 and 10:00 p.m.
