WHO Says Congo’s Ebola Outbreak Is on Track to Surpass the Deadliest in History

The World Health Organization says Congo’s Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo is progressing so quickly that it may surpass the deadliest Ebola outbreak on record. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters that, at its current pace, it is on track to eclipse the 2014–2016 West African outbreak, which killed more than 11,000 people. WHO says the outbreak has killed over 2,000 people from more than 4,300 cases, and that sequencing suggests it began months earlier than first thought.
