When Three Flames Rise: Kīlauea’s Triple Lava Fountain Returns to Life

When Three Flames Rise: Kīlauea’s Triple Lava Fountain Returns to Life

Kīlauea has erupted many times over the past decades, but Episode 38 carved out a place of its own in the volcano’s long memory. Shortly after sunrise, a pulse beneath the summit stirred the quiet floor of Halemaʻumaʻu crater, sending the first bright plume of lava into the air. What began as a familiar summit fountain soon turned into something far rarer.

Within minutes, two additional vents opened — both within the north cone — answering the southern jet with their own arcs of molten fire. For a brief window, the crater held three synchronized lava fountains, a formation that volcanologists describe as extremely uncommon at Kīlauea’s summit. The event added a new texture to the eruption sequence that has been unfolding for more than a year.

The southern vent rose to dominance almost immediately. Observers estimated its highest bursts reached around 1,200 feet, a height that pushed the fountain into the upper tier of activity seen throughout the current eruption. The north-cone fountains, lower but still forceful, created a triangular pattern across the crater floor, each jet rising through the same haze of volcanic gas drifting above the summit.

The episode lasted just over twelve hours long enough to resurface a wide section of the crater interior with fresh lava. The intensity was strong enough to overwhelm one of the monitoring cameras positioned along the southern rim, which was struck by falling material during the height of the south-vent activity. Ground crews later confirmed it had been destroyed.

Despite the scale of the fountains, there were no immediate risks to communities surrounding the national park. Air quality advisories remained in effect as volcanic gases drifted downwind, but emergency officials reported no additional hazards.

Episode 38 stands out because of its geometry — three vents erupting together, each shaped by the same pressure deep beneath the summit. It was a moment where the volcano revealed a more complex rhythm, something that even long-time observers acknowledged as unusual. Whether Kīlauea will repeat such a display in future episodes remains uncertain, but for the scientists who monitor its behavior daily, this chapter is one that will be analyzed for months to come.
