When the Sky That Usually Withholds Begins to Give Too Much

A potent storm system prompted mandatory evacuations in Arizona and Colorado as heavy rain fell on saturated ground, with the San Juan River forecast to exceed its 1911 record.

When the Sky That Usually Withholds Begins to Give Too Much

There is a particular irony in water arriving as a threat in places defined by its absence. The Southwest has spent years learning to live with drought, to ration and conserve, to see the color of the sky as a promise rather than a warning. This weekend, the sky broke that promise in the other direction.

A potent storm system moved across Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah, dumping heavy rain on ground already saturated from flooding less than two weeks earlier and prompting mandatory evacuations in tourist towns and rural communities alike . In Sedona, Arizona, officials ordered residents near Oak Creek to leave immediately as floodwaters rose and trapped multiple people in their homes. The city's fire district chief, Ed Mezulis, urged residents to stay on high ground as crews from surrounding communities rushed to assist .

In southwestern Colorado, the town of Pagosa Springs braced for what the Archuleta County Sheriff's Office called "a potentially catastrophic flood event." The San Juan River was forecast to crest at more than nineteen feet, well above the 17.8-foot record set during the devastating 1911 flood that destroyed much of the town as it then existed . Mandatory evacuation orders covered low-lying areas along the San Juan, Rio Blanco, Navajo, and Piedra rivers, and the highway into town was closed to inbound traffic . "Be prepared to be away from your home for multiple days," the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management warned .

The numbers behind the flooding carry their own quiet weight. Meteorologist Aaron Hardin of the National Weather Service in Tucson put it plainly: "We are getting two or three months of rain in a span of a couple of days" . By Sunday afternoon, emergency crews in Pima County had carried out at least sixteen river rescues. In Flagstaff, authorities searched for a man who slipped into fast-moving water and did not resurface . In Gila County, officials ordered the total evacuation of Gisela, a small community along Tonto Creek .

For Pagosa Springs, the timing has been especially difficult. An evacuation order had been lifted just days earlier, only to be reimposed on Saturday night as the forecast worsened . Katie German, who owns a coffee shop in town, said she was most worried about the single bridge into town washing out and cutting off supplies. "I'm worried about my business, worried about my employees, definitely worried for everybody in this town," she said. "This town, we're a very, very tight community. We all help each other out" .

The storm is expected to move east toward the Great Plains, with conditions gradually improving across the Southwest. But the ground remains saturated, the rivers remain high, and the work of assessing what the water has taken will begin only after it recedes.
