PLANADAS, Colombia — A deadly bomb attack in western Colombia has claimed the lives of four people, including a two-month-old infant, after an explosives-laden vehicle detonated near a military installation.
The attack occurred in the town of Planadas, located in the southern region of Tolima department. The powerful blast caused severe structural damage to nearby homes and a local hospital.
Authorities reported that a truck loaded with explosives was detonated near the military base. The force of the explosion sent shockwaves through surrounding residential streets, causing immediate panic as buildings collapsed and debris scattered across the area.
Emergency medical responders treated multiple wounded residents on-site, converting a nearby local school into a temporary triage and treatment center. Local emergency services worked through the rubble to locate survivors and transport the injured to medical facilities.
Tolima Governor Adriana Magali Matiz confirmed the fatalities on social media, expressing profound grief over the loss of life, particularly the two-month-old baby girl.
Regional and national leaders condemned the attack as a direct assault on innocent civilians and public safety.
"What happened tonight in Planadas is of utmost gravity—a vile and criminal act that we reject with absolute forcefulness," Governor Matiz stated. "Attacking the civilian population and putting at risk the lives of our soldiers and Tolima families is crossing a line that we will not tolerate."
Police and military forces have secured the perimeter surrounding the explosion site. While no group has immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing, law enforcement agencies and intelligence personnel have launched a joint investigation to identify those responsible for orchestrating the attack.
Following the initial emergency response, community leaders and national officials have called for an immediate surge in security measures across the Tolima department to prevent further violence. Grief counselors and disaster relief teams are currently being deployed to Planadas to assist traumatized residents and families displaced by the structural damage. As investigations continue into the suspects behind the truck bombing, local authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies.
