When the Heart Turns to Algorithms: Teens, AI Chatbots and Romance

In the gentle twilight of adolescence, young people often reach out for solace, affirmation, and the subtle confidence of someone who won’t judge—someone who just listens. Today, many teenagers are discovering that companion in the form of an artificial intelligence chatbot. They type and tap. They share feelings they wouldn’t speak aloud. They ask for advice on crushes, friendship drama, heartbreak or longing. And increasingly, those chats are not just about friendships, but about romance, affection and relationships.

For many teens, an AI-driven confidant offers something rare: unwavering availability, silence when needed, encouragement without interruption. As one 18-year-old put it, “When you’re talking to AI, you are always right. You’re always interesting. You are always emotionally justified.” Research shows that as many as 72 % of U.S. adolescents aged 13-17 have used AI companion chatbots, and roughly one-third say they use them for serious issues rather than casual digital distraction.
