When the Co-Pilot Becomes the Threat, a Captain's Last Push Saves All

There are moments when the ordinary machinery of human life—the routines, the schedules, the quiet assumption that tomorrow will arrive as expected—collides with something unimaginable. For the passengers and crew of FlyDubai flight 1073, that collision came at 34,000 feet, somewhere between Dubai and Tel Aviv, when the person entrusted with their safety became the source of their greatest danger. What followed was a struggle that lasted less than an hour but has since been described by world leaders as an act of heroism that saved nearly 180 lives.

Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot at the center of that struggle, spoke publicly for the first time on Friday from his hospital bed in Abu Dhabi. His head bandaged, tubes in his nose, he described to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi the minutes after his co-pilot attacked him with a crash axe, leaving him wounded and the plane plunging toward the desert below . "I was fighting for my life," he said, his voice breaking. "At one point, I realized that if I didn't get up… then passengers would lose their lives" .

The flight had departed Dubai at 3:05 a.m. local time, carrying 182 people on what should have been a routine three-hour journey to Tel Aviv . According to flight tracking data, at approximately 5:21 a.m., the aircraft began a steep descent, plummeting more than 14,000 feet in less than a minute . Inside the cockpit, the co-pilot—an Omani national who has not been publicly identified—had attacked Machchhar, striking him repeatedly with the crash axe kept in the cockpit for emergencies . Machchhar, who has 17 years of flying experience, said his training allowed him to sense the plane's descent even after he had been knocked to the floor. "I can sense exactly what is happening with the aircraft even with my eyes closed," he told Modi .

Despite his wounds—deep cuts to his head, hands, and neck—Machchhar made a decision that would prove decisive. He reached for the cockpit door and unlocked it, allowing passengers to enter. "I knew this was the last push, that the door was right there," he said. "I was being hit even then, but I just opened the door and everyone came in" . That single act transformed the situation. Passengers, including an Israeli plumber named Yaniv Hayun, a dentist named Dr. Shota Musaev, and several others, rushed forward and subdued the attacker, binding his hands with cables from passenger headphones . Dr. Musaev, who treated Machchhar's wounds, later described the captain as having lost a large amount of blood but remaining conscious .

In what investigators have described as a stroke of fortune, two off-duty FlyDubai pilots were traveling as passengers on the flight. After passengers secured the cockpit, these two pilots took control of the aircraft and landed it safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia . The co-pilot was arrested and later transferred to the United Arab Emirates, where he is undergoing interrogation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Fox News that the attacker had undergone "Islamist radical indoctrination" and was "suicidal," though he acknowledged it was too early to determine whether the attack was orchestrated by an outside party .

Machchhar, who is married with two children, has been hailed as a hero across the world. Modi told him his "courage, patience, and presence of mind" had saved many lives . The UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority commended the captain, crew, and passengers for their "decisive and swift intervention" . But perhaps the most striking aspect of Machchhar's account is its simplicity—the absence of any claim to heroism, only a description of what he felt he had to do. He spoke of reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, a Hindu prayer for strength, in those desperate moments. "Lord Hanuman gave me courage," he said . The investigation into the attack continues, but for the 182 people who landed safely in Saudi Arabia, the question of why it happened matters less than the fact that it was stopped.
