NASA, too, changed in the aftermath—slower, more cautious, more publicly aware of risk. But it did not abandon the idea that space belongs, in part, to those who explain it. Educators continue to fly experiments, communicate with students from orbit, and frame space exploration as something learned, not merely achieved.

What McAuliffe represented was not conquest, but continuity. The idea that knowledge travels forward even when plans fail. That teaching is not a performance, but a relay, passed hand to hand across time.

She never reached orbit. Yet forty years on, her presence remains there—in lesson plans, in quiet planetariums, in the expectation that exploration should always make room for explanation. Her mission continues not above the Earth, but across it.
