One of the largest recent incidents occurred in Lasem, Central Java, where 752 students and 25 teachers reportedly fell ill after eating grilled chicken. The chicken was reported to have developed an unusual texture after being cooked during the early morning and served later in the day, raising concerns about food storage and the time meals spent before reaching students.

Additional cases were reported in Sidoarjo, Nganjuk, and Agam. Together, the incidents added to a larger pattern that has emerged since the meal program began. Reuters reported that more than 50,000 people had been affected by food poisoning incidents since the program’s launch, according to figures cited by lawmakers.

The scale of the program makes food safety a logistical question as much as a kitchen question. Meals must be prepared, stored, transported, and delivered across different communities, often according to schedules designed to serve large numbers of children. The program itself was created with a much broader purpose: improving child nutrition on a national scale. Its budget has been reported at around $12.94 billion, reflecting the size of the government’s effort to make school meals available to millions of recipients. The recent illnesses have therefore placed a practical health question alongside an ambitious national nutrition objective.
