Shamonda Virus Detected in a Human for the First Time in France

French authorities reported the first known human infection with Shamonda virus in a patient treated at a hospice in Lyon. The patient, who had a serious underlying illness and was immunocompromised, died in early October. Initial investigations indicate the virus may have contributed to neurological complications before death, though inquiries are continuing. Shamonda virus has mainly been detected in livestock and is spread by biting midges. Authorities said they see no risk to the general population at this stage.
