On the ever‑busy sidewalks and in crowded cafés where technology increasingly blends into everyday life, a new kind of app quietly raises awareness about the gadgets we might not even notice. Smart glasses — from Meta’s Ray‑Ban models to other camera‑equipped wearable eyewear — are becoming more common, but their discreet appearance has sparked concerns about privacy and unseen recording. In response, a Swiss developer has introduced a novel tool designed to help people understand when such devices could be nearby.

The app, called Nearby Glasses, was created by Yves Jeanrenaud, a sociologist and hobbyist programmer. Rather than tracking individuals, the software listens for the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) “advertising frames” that many smart glasses emit. These short‑distance radio signatures act like a device’s fingerprint in the wireless spectrum: by recognizing codes associated with known manufacturers, the app can notify users when a compatible pair of smart glasses might be within a few dozen feet. Outdoors, the tool generally works across roughly 32–50 feet; indoors in denser crowds, its range is slightly shorter.

Jeanrenaud frames the project not as a panacea but as “a tiny part of resistance against surveillance tech.” He explained that his motivation stemmed from growing concerns about covert recording — especially since some smart glasses can capture photos or video without obvious cues to bystanders. The app, currently available on Android via the Google Play Store and open‑source repositories, sends a push alert when a likely smart glasses signal is detected nearby, giving users a heads‑up about potential recording devices in their vicinity.

While this kind of scanning can help raise situational awareness, there are limitations. The Bluetooth identifiers used for detection are tied to manufacturers, not specific models, so the app can sometimes misidentify other wireless hardware — like virtual‑reality headsets — as smart glasses. It also cannot determine whether a detected device is actively recording, nor can it pinpoint the wearer’s exact location. In other words, Nearby Glasses acts more as an informational trigger than a precise surveillance detector.

Still, as concerns about wearable technologies and privacy deepen, this app represents an early example of how grassroots developers are exploring ways to engage with those concerns — even as the tech itself evolves toward more powerful and compact forms.
