When Autumn Arrives, Protection Follows

There is a quiet ritual to the arrival of autumn—the turning of leaves, the shortening of days, and the annual reminder that the season of respiratory illness is approaching. In Saskatchewan this October, that reminder has arrived in the form of open appointment bookings for influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations, a simple step that public health officials describe as one of the most effective ways to protect both individual health and community resilience.

Beginning Tuesday, October 6, Saskatchewan residents became eligible to book appointments for this year's influenza and COVID-19 vaccines through the Saskatchewan Health Authority's online booking tool or by phone . The vaccines are free of charge to all individuals aged six months and older and are available at public health clinics, participating pharmacies, and some physician and nurse practitioner offices .

Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill encouraged residents to consider immunization as part of their fall preparations. "Getting immunized is a simple step we can all take to protect ourselves and the people around us," he said . The province has identified seniors, people with chronic health conditions or compromised immune systems, children under five, and pregnant women as groups most at risk of severe outcomes from respiratory illness .

Dr. Julie Kryzanowski, a senior medical health officer with the SHA, emphasized the importance of early vaccination. "We encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible to help reduce the spread of Influenza and COVID-19 and keep our communities healthy," she said . Residents can choose to receive both vaccines in a single appointment or separately, depending on their preference .

The Saskatchewan campaign unfolds against a backdrop of an unusually early flu season across Canada. National figures show that between September 27 and October 3, 4.7 percent of influenza tests came back positive—far higher than the average 0.6 percent rate seen during the same period in 2023-2025 . By mid-October, more than 3,300 influenza detections had been reported across the country since the end of August, with more than 1,140 in the most recent week of available data . Two flu-related deaths had been recorded, one in the Calgary area .

The Pan American Health Organization issued an epidemiological alert in January warning of the simultaneous circulation of influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which could increase pressure on health systems during the northern hemisphere's winter season . The organization urged countries to prioritize vaccination for high-risk groups and to strengthen surveillance for multiple respiratory viruses .

For Saskatchewan residents, the message is straightforward. The vaccines are available, free, and designed to prevent the most severe outcomes of illnesses that circulate every year. Whether the season ahead proves mild or severe, the protection offered by immunization is the same: a quiet, unglamorous safeguard against the predictable return of respiratory viruses.
