When Artificial Intelligence Enters Everyday Business: Thailand's Companies Begin Moving Beyond Experimentation Toward Transformation

There is a quiet moment before technology becomes truly ordinary. At first, it arrives as something new to test, a tool demonstrated in meetings and explored by curious employees. In Thailand, artificial intelligence has passed that early stage for many businesses, but the deeper transformation remains uneven.

A study released by Amazon Web Services and Strand Partners in July found that 43% of Thai businesses were using AI consistently, up from 32% the previous year. The research estimated that around 220,000 additional businesses had adopted AI during the 12-month period.

The numbers suggest that artificial intelligence is no longer confined to technology companies. Businesses across different industries are experimenting with tools that can generate content, summarize information, analyze data, assist customers, and automate routine activities.

Yet adoption does not necessarily mean transformation. The same research found that 74% of businesses using AI remained at a basic stage, while only 9% had reached an advanced level of integration. The difference lies not simply in whether a company has AI, but in how deeply the technology becomes part of its operations.

Skills are one of the central challenges. More than half of businesses surveyed identified a shortage of relevant skills as an obstacle to deeper AI adoption. Companies also cited the absence of formal AI strategies and governance frameworks as barriers.

That gap between experimentation and integration can be important. A business might use AI to draft documents or summarize meetings without changing its underlying operations. A more advanced organization might connect AI with customer systems, production data, logistics, or decision-making processes.

The potential rewards are beginning to appear. Among Thai businesses already using AI, 84% reported productivity improvements, while 71% reported increased revenue, according to the AWS-Strand Partners research. The companies reporting revenue gains indicated an average increase of 19%.

These figures help explain why businesses continue investing in the technology despite the challenges. AI can offer practical value when it is applied to problems that are clearly defined and supported by reliable data.

But technology alone cannot create that value. Employees need training, managers need to understand where AI can genuinely improve operations, and companies need systems that allow information to move securely between different parts of the organization.

Thailand's wider investment landscape is also moving in this direction. Digital investment has become the country's largest investment category, with data centers and cloud services providing much of the infrastructure required for AI applications.

The next stage of Thailand's AI journey may therefore be less about how many companies begin using artificial intelligence and more about how deeply they learn to use it. The technology has entered the workplace; the more difficult task now is turning experimentation into lasting capability, with people, skills, data, and governance moving alongside the machines.
