When Anthropic Turns Toward Wall Street, Artificial Intelligence

For years, artificial intelligence companies have grown inside a world of private funding, research laboratories, enormous computing demands, and investors willing to look far into the future. Now, that private world is moving closer to the public markets as Anthropic prepares for a potential initial public offering.

Anthropic is expected to begin marketing its IPO in mid-October at the earliest and complete the listing days later, according to Reuters, citing people familiar with the plans. The timing remains subject to change, meaning the public debut is not yet a fixed event.

If it proceeds, the offering would place one of the most closely watched AI companies directly in front of public-market investors. Anthropic develops artificial-intelligence systems and is best known for its Claude family of models, putting it among the companies at the center of the rapidly expanding generative-AI industry.

The potential listing arrives after a period of extraordinary private investment in AI infrastructure. Companies building and operating advanced models require large amounts of computing power, data-center capacity, specialized chips, and energy. That has created a business environment in which technological progress and capital requirements have become closely intertwined.

Anthropic has also continued expanding its infrastructure commitments. Reuters recently reported that the company signed a $35 billion cloud-computing deal with Lambda for a Texas data center, highlighting the enormous scale of computing resources required to support AI model development and usage.

The company has simultaneously faced the technical and security challenges that accompany rapid AI development. Reuters reported in August that Anthropic resumed external cybersecurity testing of its AI models after introducing additional safeguards following security incidents.

Those developments illustrate the unusual nature of the business surrounding advanced AI. Growth is measured not only through customers and revenue but also through computing capacity, model capabilities, infrastructure agreements, and the ability to manage increasingly complex systems.

For Wall Street, the eventual IPO would provide a new opportunity to value an AI company whose future depends heavily on a technology still developing at extraordinary speed. Public investors would have to weigh current performance against expectations for future demand, infrastructure spending, competition, and the rapidly changing capabilities of AI models.

The scale of interest is already evident in the financial expectations surrounding Anthropic. Reuters previously reported that investors were examining long-term revenue assumptions that could support a valuation of hundreds of billions of dollars, underscoring how much future growth is already embedded in discussions about the company.

For now, the road to Wall Street remains a plan rather than a completed journey. Anthropic is expected to move toward an October marketing period for its offering, while investors and the wider technology industry wait to see how one of the most prominent private AI companies will ultimately be valued in the public market.
