On a gray autumn morning, the hum of data centers feels less like progress and more like a warning — for workers, for communities, for the climate. Inside Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, a chorus of concern is rising. More than a thousand employees across Amazon — from software engineers to warehouse associates — have added their names to an open letter urging the company to slow down what they describe as a “warp-speed” confrontation with the future.

The letter is blunt: Amazon’s aggressive AI buildup — marked by plans to spend roughly US$150 billion on new data-center infrastructure — threatens not only jobs, but democratic norms and the planet’s fragile climate. Signatories warn that continued expansion may lock in reliance on fossil-fuel energy, especially in regions where data centres draw from carbon-heavy electricity grids.

It’s not just about infrastructure. From inside the company, staff say that AI is being used to justify deeper cuts and intensify workloads. Recent layoffs — affecting tens of thousands — are widely perceived as tied to rising automation. Meanwhile, employees report growing pressure to adopt AI tools, often being told to boost output or face obsolescence. “We’re the workers who develop, train, and use AI,” the letter states — “so we have a responsibility to intervene.”

The signatories come from many levels within Amazon — engineers, product managers, warehouse workers — highlighting how wide the concerns run. Their demands are concrete, not just symbolic:

All data centers powering Amazon’s AI must run on 100% additional local renewable energy, around the clock. AI deployment should not proceed without meaningful input from non-managerial staff, granting workers a voice in governance. The company must commit to not building or selling AI tools that enable violence, mass surveillance, or environmental destruction. For the workers, this isn’t opposition to AI per se — many say they believe in the potential of technology. Their concern is how rapidly and recklessly it’s being deployed. “We don’t want to stop AI — we want it done responsibly,” one signatory told reporters.

What’s unfolding inside Amazon may be a harbinger for the tech industry at large. As more companies rush to automate, questions mount: Who decides when and how AI is deployed? At what cost — to jobs, to communities, to the climate? And who has the right to shape that future?

For now, Amazon’s AI push continues. But behind the code and data racks, a growing number of voices are asking to be heard. They’re urging a slowing of the race — not in fear of progress, but in defense of humans, democracy, and the Earth.

Whether the leadership will listen remains to be seen.
